Why Generator Outage Preparation Matters

FEMA recommends a minimum of 72 hours of self-sufficiency for any emergency. However, major weather events — hurricanes, ice storms, and nor'easters — routinely cause outages lasting 5–10 days. Consequently, the difference between a prepared household and an unprepared one is not just comfort: it is safety. Carbon monoxide poisoning from improperly used generators kills approximately 900 people per year according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Furthermore, water damage from unflooded sump pumps and food spoilage from unpowered refrigerators are among the most costly preventable losses during outages.

A generator that starts reliably, is properly sized, and connected safely through a transfer switch eliminates nearly all of these risks. The checklist above addresses each of these points systematically.

Generator Safety Rules — Non-Negotiable

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety

Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless gas produced by combustion engines. Even brief exposure to high concentrations causes unconsciousness and death. Therefore, portable generators must always be operated outdoors, at least 20 feet from any window, door, or vent. Additionally, install battery-operated CO detectors on every level of your home before the next storm season.

Electrical Safety

Never connect a generator directly to your home wiring without a proper transfer switch. This practice — called backfeeding — sends electricity back through utility lines, creating a lethal hazard for lineworkers restoring power. As a result, backfeeding is illegal under NEC Article 702 and will destroy your generator when utility power returns.

Fuel Safety

Store gasoline in approved containers away from your home in a cool, ventilated area. Moreover, add a fuel stabilizer to any gasoline stored for more than 30 days — ethanol-blended gasoline degrades rapidly and will clog carburetor jets, preventing your generator from starting when you need it most.

Generator Sizing for Emergency Preparedness

Essential Load Calculation

Before a storm hits, calculate your essential load — the watts required by your critical circuits. A typical essential load includes: refrigerator (150W), sump pump (800W running, 2,400W surge), furnace blower (600–800W), LED lighting for 5 rooms (100W), and device charging (200W). That totals approximately 1,850W running. However, when the sump pump starts, that spikes to 4,250W — so your generator must handle this surge.

Fuel Storage for Multi-Day Outages

A 5,500W generator running at 50% load consumes approximately 0.5–0.7 gallons of gasoline per hour. Therefore, for a 72-hour outage running 10 hours per day, you need 15–21 gallons on hand. What to Do When the Power Goes Out

First 5 Minutes

Verify the outage is not just a tripped breaker — check your main panel first. Then confirm your neighbors are also affected. Consequently, if the outage is utility-wide, activate your generator plan. Do not wait until midnight in a thunderstorm to find out your generator won't start.

Generator Startup Procedure

Move the generator outdoors to the designated 20-foot clear zone. Then check oil level, add fresh fuel if needed, and start the generator before connecting any loads. Allow 30 seconds for voltage to stabilize, then connect your transfer switch or extension cords. Finally, start with the highest-surge appliance (usually the refrigerator) before adding other loads.

During a Multi-Day Outage

Conserve fuel by cycling non-essential loads. Run the refrigerator and freezer for 2 hours, then turn them off for 4 hours — most units maintain safe temperatures for 4+ hours with the door closed. Furthermore, check the generator's oil every 8 hours of operation and refuel only with the generator stopped and cooled for 2 minutes.
