The financial case for a standby generator is challenging to make purely on dollar savings. A $9,000 installed system that prevents $500 of food spoilage per year takes 18 years to break even. The real value proposition is different:
- Peace of mind: Automatic protection — no action required during an outage
- Medical equipment: For CPAP, oxygen concentrators, or home dialysis, reliable power isn't optional
- Sump pump in flood-prone areas: One basement flood can cost $10,000–$50,000. One standby generator prevents it
- Home value: A permanently installed standby generator adds 3–5% to home resale value according to NAR data

Determine Your Required kW Size First
Before selecting a brand or model, determine the minimum kW your home needs. A licensed electrician performs a load calculation per NEC Article 220 to arrive at this number. As a general rule, however, homes with gas appliances and a 2-ton AC in the 1,500–2,500 sq ft range need a 14 kW standby. Air-Cooled vs. Liquid-Cooled Standby Generators
Air-cooled standby generators (7–26 kW range, typically under $15,000 installed) use a fan to cool the engine — the same principle as a lawn mower engine. They are, therefore, appropriate for most residential applications. Liquid-cooled generators (22 kW+, typically over $20,000 installed) use a coolant system similar to a car engine. They run quieter, last longer, and handle continuous heavy loads better, making them ideal for large estates, all-electric homes, and light commercial applications.
Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) Compatibility
Every standby generator requires an automatic transfer switch. However, not all ATS units are equal. Generac's Symphony II ATS supports load shedding (allows a smaller generator to manage a larger home by cycling heavy loads). Kohler's RXT-JFTC ATS is widely praised for reliability. Furthermore, 200A-rated ATS units work for most homes; 400A units are needed for large homes with dual 200A panels. Always verify ATS compatibility with your electrician before purchasing — the ATS must match both the generator brand and your panel configuration.
Warranty and Service Network
Standby generators require annual professional service (oil change, spark plug, air filter, ATS test). Therefore, the density of authorized dealers in your area matters more than the warranty terms on paper. Generac has the widest dealer network in the US — in most areas, multiple authorized dealers compete for business. Kohler has fewer but typically more specialized dealers. Additionally, verify warranty coverage before purchase: most brands offer 5-year limited warranties, but terms vary significantly.

The total installed cost of a standby generator depends on four variables: the generator unit price, the ATS cost, the electrical work, and the gas line installation. For a 14 kW generator, expect $4,000–$5,500 for the unit, $1,500–$2,500 for the ATS, $1,500–$3,000 for electrical work, and $500–$2,000 for gas line extension depending on distance. Additionally, a concrete or composite pad is required in most jurisdictions, adding $300–$800. As a result, total installed costs typically range from $8,000–$14,000 for a 14 kW system.
Getting Accurate Quotes
Always get at least three quotes from licensed electricians who are authorized dealers for your preferred brand. A complete quote should include the generator unit, ATS, all electrical work, gas line extension, pad, permit fees, and first-year service. However, be cautious of quotes that exclude permits or pad costs — these items are often used to create artificially low initial quotes.
